Each area of specialty will present the groundwork for how resident/patient rights are to be respected, while also assuring the quality of care and safety of individuals is maintained. Then a panel discussion will be moderated and where real life scenarios (including from the audience) will be presented for the group to discuss.

This promises to be an extremely informative and lively session with everyone learning something from the discussion.

  • What is Capacity and how does it relate to Competence, Conservatorship, and Resident’s Rights?
  • What role does an Advanced Directive, POLST, and Medical Power of Attorney play?
  • Understanding Conservatorships.
  • What is “Dementia” as it relates to Capacity and decisions?
  • Doctor’s role and Attorney’s role in determining compentency and capacity.
  • Ethical considerations, Reporting Requirements, Risks/Liability
  • What types of facilities do people with dementia reside in?
  • What happens with residents with and without AHCD, Conservatorhip, or other things to guide their care?

  • (Completed) Part 1: Wednesday September 23, 2015 “Avoid Confusion: Planning with the End In Mind”

    This first session will cover the role of Advance Care Planning, Living Wills and other tools used to facilitate planning for Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as medically frail patients. Also discussed will be the roles and responsibilities of Health Care Professionals in developing long term treatment plans to promote continuity of care for residents and how to include families, proxies and physicians in the development of an “ironclad” strategy.

  • (Completed) Part 2: Wednesday, October 28, 2015 “Avoid Lawsuits: What to look for & who to tell”

    Recognizing signs and symptoms of illness before hospitalization is necessary can be beneficial for facilities and clients, especially for people with dementia. Improving the identification, evaluation, and communication about changes in resident status will reduce acute care transfers. Specific tools designed for use by  selected members of the care team will be demonstrated using an interactive role play between a real RCFE Administrator and Medical Director. This session will focus on increasing awareness among the entire care team.

  • (Completed) Part 3: Wednesday, November 18, 2015 “Avoid Hospitalizations: When To Call Support Services & Enhance Your Offering”

    Knowing how and when to use external resources can enhance care for your residents and help earn your facility a good reputation. Using agencies to provide home health care, palliative/hospice care, mobile doctors and nurses, day programs, referral agencies, case managers and more, will distinguish your facility as one that provides a broad quality of care. Real examples will be shared during this session.
